Rapid Joint Drywall Setting Compound is a chemically activated setting-type joint compound with time-controlled hardening properties. Approximately 30% lighter than conventional setting compounds, it mixes lump free in as little as 30 seconds, spreads smoothly, feathers beautifully, and sands easily to produce a smooth-as-glass finish.
Rapid Joint is available in four different set times to meet the varied needs of drywall finishing professionals. All of the Rapid Joint Setting Compounds feature low shrinkage and exceptionally strong bonding.
The Rapid Joint line is available in the following options:
Rapid Joint 20 Setting Compound (sets in 20 to 35 minutes)
Rapid Joint 45 Setting Compound (sets in 30 to 60 minutes)
Rapid Joint 90 Setting Compound (sets in 60 to 120 minutes)
Rapid Joint 210 Setting Compound (sets in 3 to 5 hours)
Material: May contain calcium carbonate, perlite, mica, clay, synthetic or natural binders, thickeners, and calcium sulfate (gypsum).
Emissions: Asbestos free.
Coverage: Approximately 350 square feet per bag.
Setting time: Hardening times vary with type: Rapid Joint 20 will set in 20 to 35 minutes; Rapid Joint 45, in 30 to 60 minutes; Rapid Joint 90, in 60 to 120 minutes; and Rapid Joint 210, in 180 to 300 minutes. All are thoroughly dry in approximately 24 hours. Setting times will vary with conditions, such as temperature and humidity, but cannot be lengthened by adding water.
IMPORTANT: Maintain a minimum working temperature (air, material, water) of 45 degrees F (7 degrees C).
Storage: Keep dry, avoid extreme temperatures, and close tightly when not in use; the product has an 18-month shelf life if protected from moisture (including humidity). Rapid Joint is manufactured to conform to ASTM C475.
Apply according to Gypsum Association (GA) publications GA-214 and GA-216.
Mixing Directions:
To mix the entire 18-pound bag: Place 1.25 to 1.50 gallons (4.6 to 6.0 liters) of clean, drinkable water in a plastic bucket, add the compound to the water, and mix thoroughly for 30 to 60 seconds. Scrape the sides of the pail frequently to ensure even mixing, and allow the mixture to stand for two to three minutes. Mixing may be done by hand or with a power-drill mixer as long as the compound is not overly mixed. If necessary, mix the compound another 30 seconds to achieve the desired consistency (water may be added in 4-ounce (100-milliliter) increments.
Note:
Mix only the amount that can be applied within the "working" time (that is, before the earliest possible setting time). Do not mix the compound with any other product or material.
Dirty water, overmixing, or extreme heat can accelerate set time.
Overdilution can reduce bond strength and will NOT delay hardening.
The mixing container and tools must be thoroughly cleaned between uses.
Set time will be accelerated should new batches of material come in contact with the residue of previous batches.
Prefilling:
Prefill imperfections, damaged areas, and large recesses where boards meet. Remove excess material. Allow to harden completely.
Finishing Joints and Corners:
Step one: Apply a thin layer of compound to the tapered joint edge. Press the joint tape firmly into the compound (for inside corners, center-crease the tape) and tightly embed it with a finishing knife. Remove excess material. Apply a thin coat over the tape, nail/screw dimples, and corner beads/trim. For corner beads, extend the first coat at least 5 inches (125 millimeters) onto the panel. Let harden.
Step two: Apply a second coat over fasteners, joints, and trim, feathering the edges approximately 2.5 inches (65 millimeters) beyond the taping coat. For inside corners, allow one side to dry before second-coating the opposite side. Let harden completely.
Sanding:
Light sanding (150-grit sandpaper or 220-grit mesh cloth or finer) may be done when the application is completely dry (after approximately 24 hours). Wet sanding is recommended to avoid dust.
Wallpapering:
Painting should not proceed until the joint compound is thoroughly dry (see GA-236). For best results, a good-quality gypsum-board primer should be applied, in accordance with the primer manufacturer's instructions, before painting or wallpapering.
Cleanup:
Rapid Joint washes off easily with warm water. Tools should be dried thoroughly to prevent rusting.
