Since its introduction in 1969, Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete, known as GFRC, has made significant contributions to the economies, technology, and aesthetics of the construction industry worldwide. No construction material offers design professionals the creativity and flexibility of GFRC. When it comes to new construction, renovation, and restoration projects, GFRC has no equal. Made from Portland cement, aggregate and polymer binders, the casting are strengthened with alkali-resistant glass fibers, much like reinforcing bars is used to make traditional concrete stronger.
GFRC is today’s replacement material for restoration and historic replication of terra cotta, carved stone, and limestone building components. Since molds can be made from sculptural replications or existing building components, complex pieces can be created for building decor and replacement of facades which are crumbling due to the effects of time and climatic elements. Compared to poured concrete, GFRC is strong yet lightweight with the color and finish replicating the original materials, be it the look and feel of stone or terra cotta. GFRC's high strength and low shrinkage rates allows historic buildings to be returned to their original classical appearance.
