Description

Via the talents of a close network of artisans, artists, and craftsmen, Wood & Hogan is able to offer precise reproductions of antique pieces from the golden age of English period furniture. Some of the pieces in Wood & Hogan’s line were originally owned by the company and others have been recreated through the intense scrutiny of photographic evidence, but all display the unmistakable craftsmanship and precise detail of these antique works of art: “This is evident in all elements, from timber selection through cabinetmaking, from veneering and inlay to woodcarving, and finally in French polishing and gilt leather tooling.”

  • Queen Anne Walnut Chair— This delicate Queen Anne style chair exemplifies the ornate and precise carving techniques indicative of the era. Constructed entirely of solid walnut, the chair features a hand-carved open back with a curvaceous design somewhat reminiscent of a heart motif; Cabriole legs (the English derivation of the iconic Rococo of the era of Louis XV); and patterned upholstery. Other qualities indicative of the era include shepard’s crook-style arms and carved front legs with trifid foot. The Queen Anne Walnut Chair is a beautiful heirloom piece that will pass muster for the most rigorous collectors of period furnishings.
  • Black Lacquered George III Style Breakfront Bookcase— This ornate and stylish piece embodies many of the distinctive features characteristic of early 19th century England: heavy lacquer, contrasting exterior and interior colors, chinoiserie decoration, and geometrical grillwork on the display doors. The interior of the upper bookcase features shelves finished in a heavy red lacquer, providing a stark and stylish counterpoint to the black exterior. This Breakfront Bookcase is a flawless reproduction—a museum-quality piece that’s an excellent addition for specialized collectors as well as those with a more generalized affinity for the period.

Evocative of the early 19th century, Regency style furnishings often featured a “rigid, geometric order” as well as the Neoclassical influence of the ancient cultures of Greece, Rome, Asia, and Egypt. With its carved and fluted pilasters, cupboard-style doors, and fitted drawers, the Regency Style Commode offers the spatial symmetry characteristic of Neoclassicism. This versatile piece features some ornate qualities as well: gold leaf and gilt details and a solid brass diamond-shaped grill.

For collectors of fine period-style English furnishings, Wood & Hogan sets the precedent as a premier supplier of flawless reproductions. In addition to their extensive collection of Queen Anne, Georgian, and Regency style furnishings, the company offers bespoke pieces as well, whether as a requested modification to an existing style or as an entirely new piece. Recently, Wood & Hogan has augmented their line to include additional styles beyond 18th. and 19th century English: “Our expanding collection of traditional and transitional furnishings is coupled with an extensive and varied selection of complementary and unique lamps, prints, mirrors and decorative accessories.”
