Stephen Pikus Design, Ltd.(TRuK) - wakaNINE

Our passion is to locally (and lovingly) create beautiful, functional lighting pieces, whilst empowering people and encouraging a respect for the environment.

• Stephen Pikus was raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, often accompanying his contractor father to building sites, and has had a love for working with his hands ever since. In 2010, he and his family moved to Limpopo Province to work with a local NGO. The spaces housing their community projects needed to beautified with very little budget. Pikus fell in love with lighting and the challenge of creating on shoestring, and started exploring recycled materials. On a trip to Jeffreys Bay, he found an air filter in a rubbish bin at a fuel stop…and the rest is history.

• TRuK works closely with local micro recyclers to source air filters, and with the New Beginnings Care Centre to staff his design shop with their clients, offering a new future for parolees and those battling substance abuse.

• “I believe that environmentally conscious design goes way beyond merely using energy saving bulbs in a fitting. It’s about the responsible sourcing of materials, the use of earth friendly processes and about making a positive impact environmentally and socially. Many materials are thrown away daily and many of these, with a little imagination, can become something beautiful. We have a responsibility to educate future generations on the importance of an environmental conscience.” Stephen Pikus
