Known For

In Brief

Manufacturer InterfaceFLOR is the first to admit that the company philosophy was a “square idea in a broadloom world.” Founder Ray Anderson’s “square idea” was modular carpet tile. Conceived back in the 70s, carpet tiles seemed unorthodox indeed, yet InterfaceFLOR has parlayed the notion into one of the most important innovations in flooring. As compared to conventional carpets, InterfaceFLOR’s extensive line of carpet tiles offer streamlined manufacturing, minimized waste, easier installation, and unparalleled design potential.

Description

InterfaceFLOR is known for their achievements in sustainability. Following the mandates of the company’s “Mission Zero” policy, InterfaceFLOR observes sound environmental practices in all aspects of manufacturing. This extends to resource procurement, materials use, pollution control and offsets, and life cycle issues. InterfaceFLOR’s carpet tiles boast high quantities of post-consumer material. The company routinely partners with ecologically-conscious suppliers such as Aquafil, a company that produces a 100% recycled content fiber.

  • Revolutionary Backing Material — In 1999, InterfaceFLOR introduced GlasBac RE. A backing material made from post consumer content, GlasBac RE contained the highest recycled content in the industry. Composed of a recycled solid thermoplastic vinyl composite material reinforced with fiberglass, the modular backing system demonstrates enduring functionality and superior dimensional stability. Furthermore, it is easily re-absorbed back into the product stream: “After reclamation, the nylon face and vinyl backing are separated. The backing is then recycled into the GlasBac RE backing system, which may then be reclaimed and recycled again.”
  • The Entropy Line — In 2000, InterfaceFLOR launched the Entropy line. Following the principle of biomimicry, this innovative collection was patterned on naturally occurring, organic designs. the Entropy line thus breaks away from conventional carpet tile designs (which require matching dye lots and directional installation). Because they simply vary in patterning within one style and colorway, Entropy carpet tiles can be laid in any direction. This results in easier, faster installation and significantly less waste.
  • TacTiles Carpet Tiles — The “Next Generation Installation” achievement of TacTiles sets InterfaceFLOR above and beyond other carpet manufacturers. InterfaceFLOR’s system of hidden, interlocking joints allows the TacTiles carpet tiles to adhere to each other, rather than the sub floor. This revolutionary system thus eliminates the use of adhesives in installation, thereby creating a cleaner, safer (90% fewer VOCs than conventional adhesive-based installation) way to install tile. TacTiles also offers unparalleled versatility—the modular tiles allow a “floating floor” that can be dismantled easily without damage to the existing sub floor or to the carpet tiles.
  • Matrix and Distressed Collections — InterfaceFLOR’s flagship product for corporate flooring, Matrix and Distressed both offer clean, geometric patterning with the kind of colorful variation and textural intricacy that gives corporations a unique aesthetic and singular identity. Matrix is loosely based on the iconography of computers, “an orderly pattern accentuated by fine lines that expand and contract in two simple tones.” Distressed is both sophisticated and casual. Its slightly faded appearance evokes the comfort of a well-used pair of blue jeans, yet its linear rigor suggests a focused ethos and a marked professionalism. Constructed of 100% non-virgin yarn, the Distressed Collection has especially impressive environmental credentials.

InterfaceFLOR has revolutionized the carpet manufacturing sector. The company’s industry-leading environmental initiatives have garnered multiple accolades, including the Best of NeoCon 2011 Silver award, the 2010 IIDEX/NeoCon Canada Silver award for Innovative Products, the 2008 Achievement Award for “Emerging Technologies in Materials, Processes and Applications” from the Society of Plastics Engineers, and the 2007 Recycler of the Year Award from the Carpet America Recovery Effort. As they continue to enhance sustainability—reducing waste, limiting the use of fossil fuels, eliminating toxins, increasing post-consumer content, and enhancing recyclability—InterfaceFLOR remains a model of environmental stewardship. They consistently demonstrate how attractive, durable, and highly functional product can be made in an ecologically-conscious manner.
