critters II are made of vinyl materials which are animal-friendly and easy to clean. they are stuffed with poly-fill as well as poly-pellets for weight. the indentifying graphics are silkscreened onto fronts, backs and appliques.
when we started making toys we didn't know that vinyl was at all toxic. we assumed that since it was rated for upholstery conditions within hospitals that it was fine. why wouldn't it be? however our research revealed that it does emit VOCs (specifically DINP) based on the plasticizers or phtalates used to make the vinyl flexible. it is considered safe only when you are within the safe exposure limits which is about 99% of the time. see the results here: human tests from dutch consensus group.
for some parents and environmentalists that 1% chance of your child being exposed to toxins is too high. we at swigg tend to agree and have since moved on to sourcing chemical free - stable polymers for use in our future toys. polyeurethane is considered stable and elastomers are even more stable and are beginning to emerge in the market now.
so our disclaimer - feel free to purchase these critters and enjoy them perhaps on a shelf viewed at a distance. no mouth exposure means no chance of direct ingestion of any chemicals. know that we here at swigg products are doing everything to keep on top of the research and the data as we become aware of it and will always pass that info along to our customers.
