The 2000 NFPA Life Safety Code specifies that the extent to which emergency lighting needs to be provided outside of the building should be to either a public way or a distance from the building that is considered safe (Section A.7.9.1.1). This often requires the placement of a luminaire on the exterior of the building to provide this emergency illumination.
