Founded in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1912 as “The Metal Office Furniture Company,” Steelcase’s original signature innovation was the steel trashcan: “a major innovation at a time when straw wastebaskets were a serious office fire hazard.” The infamous steel desk followed soon after.
